Analytics

Web analytics

Track visitors, engagement, and social media traffic across your sites.

Installation

Before tracking social media traffic, make sure you have the Vesso tracking code installed on your site. Navigate to the Web Analytics page and click Get Code to access your site-specific tracking script.

Quick start: Add the tracking script to the <head> section of your HTML before tracking any social media traffic.

Social media tracking

Track visitors coming from social media platforms using UTM parameters and social sharing URLs.

UTM parameters

UTM parameters are tags you add to your URLs to track the source, medium, and campaign of your traffic. When someone clicks a link with UTM parameters, Vesso automatically captures and categorizes the visit.

text
https://yourdomain.com/landing-page?utm_source=facebook&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=spring_sale

Parameter breakdown

  • →utm_source: The platform or source (e.g., facebook, twitter, linkedin, instagram)
  • →utm_medium: The marketing medium (e.g., social, paid-social, referral)
  • →utm_campaign: The specific campaign name (e.g., spring_sale, product_launch)
  • →utm_content: (Optional) Differentiate similar content or A/B test variations
  • →utm_term: (Optional) Track paid search keywords

Platform-specific sharing

FacebookDocs

Share links on Facebook using the Facebook Share Dialog:

https://www.facebook.com/sharer/sharer.php?u=YOUR_URL_WITH_UTM

X (Twitter)Docs

Share on X using the Web Intent:

https://twitter.com/intent/tweet?url=YOUR_URL_WITH_UTM&text=YOUR_MESSAGE

LinkedInDocs

Share on LinkedIn using the Share URL:

https://www.linkedin.com/sharing/share-offsite/?url=YOUR_URL_WITH_UTM

Instagram

Instagram does not support direct URL sharing in posts. Use the link sticker in Stories or your bio link; add UTM parameters to the URL.

Advanced tracking

Track clicks on social media links directly on your website:

html
<!-- Add this to track social media clicks -->
<script>
  document.querySelectorAll('a[href*="facebook.com"], a[href*="twitter.com"]').forEach(link => {
    link.addEventListener('click', function() {
      VessoAnalytics.track('social_click', {
        platform: this.href.includes('facebook') ? 'facebook' : 'twitter',
        url: this.href
      });
    });
  });
</script>

Note: Add this code after your main Vesso tracking script. The analytics helper is available as window.VessoAnalytics; customize the selectors to match your site-specific social media link structure.

Best practices

  • ✓Consistent naming: Use lowercase and underscores for UTM parameters (e.g., spring_sale, not Spring Sale)
  • ✓Document your campaigns: Keep a spreadsheet of your UTM campaigns for reference
  • ✓Test before sharing: Click your tagged links to ensure they work and tracking is captured
  • ✓Use URL shorteners carefully: Some shorteners strip UTM parameters; test or use campaign-aware shorteners
  • ✓Monitor regularly: Check your Web Analytics dashboard to see which platforms drive the most traffic
  • ✓A/B test content: Use utm_content to test different messages or creative on the same platform

Troubleshooting

Traffic not showing up

  • →Verify the Vesso tracking code is installed on your site
  • →Check that UTM parameters are properly formatted (no spaces, use underscores)
  • →Allow a few minutes for data to appear in the dashboard
  • →Test in an incognito window to rule out browser caching

Incorrect source attribution

  • →Ensure utm_source matches the platform name exactly
  • →Check for typos in your UTM parameters
  • →Verify the URL was not modified by a URL shortener
